She is fluent in English, French, Persian and conversational Arabic. She gained experience in Lebanon, where she worked on the integration of Syrian children into the local education system as part of a development project. She also dealt with migration issues in Iran, Turkey and Belgium.

You work with cultural diversity, different languages and life stories from around the world daily. What is your work as a cultural mediator devoted to?

In my role as a cultural mediator, in addition to interpreting and translating, I strive to ensure that the people I work with learn to navigate the system in which they are currently. Conversations with each other point out what is new, unfamiliar, and in some cases, even incomprehensible to them. Unclarity mainly concerns the system’s functioning in Slovakia, its customs, rules and laws. Therefore, my work aims to provide relevant and verified information and to present the realities of Slovakia, which in turn should facilitate the process of integration of the client into Slovak society and prevent negative phenomena and problems in everyday life of a foreigner in Slovakia. At the same time, mutual understanding is the basis of my work, i.e. showing respect for the customs, culture and traditions of the countries from which our clients come. We should remember that leaving one’s home country does not automatically mean alienation from one’s culture, customs and traditions. On the contrary, the factors leading to leaving a country are primarily political and socio-economic. From a human point of view, I see the importance of the work of a cultural mediator and any other worker in this field in restoring human dignity to people who have come to Slovakia under challenging circumstances.

How could you describe people you work with as a cultural mediator? Where do they come from?

In my work, I mostly meet people from Afghanistan, Nigeria and Arab countries such as Syria, Morocco and Libya. Within the people I come into contact with, young people between the ages of 20 and 30 predominate. Like all of us, they long for security, decent living conditions and the prospect of a job in life.

From your point of view, what are the most effective tools for the socio-cultural integration of a newcomer?

The critical prerequisite for the successful socio-cultural integration of our male and female clients is their interest in staying in the country and integrating into all areas, i.e. linguistically, professionally and socially through social ties. With this comes an interest in other aspects of Slovakia’s social, political and economic life. An integral part of the clients‘ integration is the approach and work of all the staff of the integration project, including social workers, social assistants, psychologists and cultural mediators, and their ability to convey information and explain the specificities of the system and society in which the clients find themselves. One potential tool is socio-cultural orientation courses. As this is a new project, only time and the clients‘ feedback will tell whether this is an effective tool for socio-cultural integration. However, our goal is to teach clients how to navigate the system and where to find information relevant to their needs. The given approach will ensure that, over time, they will rely less and less on the help of the integration project staff and thus achieve a degree of independence.

On the municipal level, for instance, in the Czech Republic, it is common to have a cultural mediation service employee who serves as a connecting point between communities of foreigners and the city. What is your experience in Slovakia regarding this type of work?

I assess the experience that the Czech Republic has very positively. Migration, as well as the presence of foreigners in our cities, is an integral part of global social development. Moreover, current global migration trends indicate that we as a society will be exposed to new migration pressures and flows in the coming years. We are talking here about refugees, international students, workers or members of mixed families. Therefore, the need to link the city and the foreign community will be even greater. In Slovakia, I observe positive changes towards creating projects for integrating foreigners at the municipality level, reflecting local authorities’ interest in this issue. I am curious to know whether the projects in question include the specific position of the cultural mediator. Still, in any case, any initiative on the part of local authorities increases the importance of this topic. It has yet to be possible to speak of a nationwide phenomenon of municipal involvement in the integration of foreigners. Still, each step is a step forward and a manifestation of society’s ability to respond to the challenges of modern times.

Obviously, we must devote more time to raising awareness about obstacles refugees face during integration. In your opinion, how do we need to communicate diversity to Slovak citizens?

Migration has been and will continue to be part of global social development and is, therefore, a phenomenon that cannot be turned a blind eye to or ignored. Moreover, migration is still a lively topic in the public debate, which is often accompanied by emotional and often extreme and populist attitudes and opinions. Awareness-raising campaigns and dialogue in society are the keys to greater understanding and tolerance of differences. In a country like Slovakia, which has a much shorter experience of the influx of migrants and their presence in local society compared to Western European countries, this need is even more urgent. One effective tool is workshops in schools, educational activities for young people and adults, and activities where there is personal contact and linking of local society and foreigners. The scientific community can also contribute to a positive debate through research studies on migration’s economic and social benefits. The goal that we need to work towards is that migration and the diversity that goes with it should be seen as an asset, not as a burden on society.

Refugees face many barriers and prejudices all over the world. Can you share your experience helping remove barriers and prejudices towards refugees?

The prejudices that exist in society towards refugees are linked to the countries from which they come. This is reflected in the different attitudes of political authorities and society towards different groups of refugees and their willingness to accept them on our territory, as well as in their different views of who is an asset and who is a danger to us. Prejudice against a particular group is often fuelled by ignorance of the cultural, social, political and socio-economic realities of the countries from which the foreigners come. In this case, I would refer in a particular way to people from Arab and Muslim countries. In my work as a cultural mediator, but also in general as a member of society in everyday life, I try to share my personal experiences of living in the Middle East, my experiences of interacting with the local population, as well as the knowledge regarding the region that I have gained through my studies. So far, this strategy has proved to be very effective in breaking down barriers and prejudices in relation to refugees. It is changing the perception of the traditional profile of a refugee as well as their motivation to leave their home country.

Integration is a two-way process; regarding this, what is your recommendation for the accepting society and for a newcomer to integrate into it and become a valuable part of it?

As I said in an earlier answer, the main objective is to start seeing migration as an asset, not a societal burden. Of course, there are also risks and negative phenomena associated with migration. However, these need to be pointed out in the debate based on substantiated information and evidence, not based on prejudices and unverified information. If society’s perception of foreigners, and refugees in particular, is changed and their profiles are presented in more detail, i.e. what benefits they bring to the local society in terms of education, qualifications, employment, but also cultural diversity, the conditions for integrating foreigners into our community will be easier to create. At the same time, the clients with whom we work within the integration programme are expected to make an effort to familiarise themselves with the local society’s regularities, rules, laws and specifics, which need to be respected and applied in practice in everyday life. The study of the local language, at least its basics, clearly brings the local population and foreigners closer together and facilitates the integration of the foreigner into the local society. The integration process is based on mutual respect, trust and the absence of prejudice.

Rifugio – projekt je spolufinancovaný Európskou úniou z Fondu pre azyl, migráciu a integráciu.

ENGLISH BELOW Feb. 2023 – Daša Židuliaková pôsobí v Slovenskej humanitnej rade v projekte integrácie utečencov – Rifugio – ako kultúrna mediátorka.
